A short taxi ride from Kumbakonam, you will find the Airavatesvara temple in Dharasuram. The temple built in the 12th century is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Brihadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur, and the Gangaikondacholisvaram Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram. Together they are referred to as the Great Living Chola Temples. The temple stands out for its intricate, beautiful sculptures. It is an architectural marvel and well worth a stop if you ever are travelling through Tamil Nadu. The temple includes 73 panel of sculptures depicting the life history of 63 Nayanmars. "Nowhere one can see in such details the life history of Nayanmars".

Kanchipuram is a busy, hectic,Indian town, famous for its numerous important and vibrant temples. Many pilgrims visit the town but very few tourists thus the temples and surrounds retain their charm. The GRT Regency Hotel is a good place to stay and the Saravana Bhavan (next door) (pure vegetarian) serves the best food in the city. Some temples can be visited by foot others need a tuk-tuk ride. Kanchipuram is also a renown for its silk and women come from far and wide to buy their silk saris.
