The black caimen live in lakes and slow-flowing water, during the day we saw a few from our canoe but in the evening as night fell dozens of pairs of black caiman eyes peering out from water – creating an extraordinary glow of amazing colours created a spectacular sight. At first glance it looks like swarms of fireflies lighting up the night skies. But on closer inspection the light dots are the eyes of the black caiman hunting in the water. The image of their eyes glowing like stars in a dark sky is something I will never forget.
