I have travelled to mrauk u and the surrounding areas three times in the past ten years and have found its people as in most of burma very friendly. But it shows how we only just see the surface - the area around Mrauk u has recently seen some terrible incidents, Muslim villages burnt to the ground, the Muslims people chased and stoned, much of this ethnic fighting is encouraged or at least condoned by the monks, who hold much power over the Buddhist people.
They have a lot to answer for in my eyes, this isn't the teaching of the Buddha that I know.
Mrauk u was off limits to foreigners as from September 2012, now it is possible to travel there once again but only with a permit.
