The cliff above is where the sun first touches England every morning. The village is St. Margaret's the most easterly situated in Kent. At the north end of the bay is Leathercote Point where a war memorial stands commemorating the Dover Patrol. According to the International Hydrographic Organization, Leathercote Point marks the western end of the line which defines the divide between the North Sea and the English Channel.

The cliffs form part of the South Downs Way, a long distance walking path.
