Kumbakonam, what a great little town it is known as a "temple town" due to the prevalence of a number of temples, but apart from the temples, its lively, colourful, bustling, with not so much traffic. We stay in the Poppys hotel, a new hotel aimed at the new middle-class Indians. The only drawback - no beer. Tamil Nadu is a "dry" state, no alcohol. In most places we could "find" a cold beer albeit wrapped in a brown paper bag and served from under the counter. But in Kumbakonam no sunset beer, we had to make do with oranges and coconuts.
