As an avid moestuin grower, I know that despite staggering seed planting, you can always end up with a glut. A glut of cabbages that challenge our cooking skills or so much sla that we have to cook it.
A glut or abundance of season fruit and vegetable is often seen in the markets, having no storage facilities and the distribution system is very limited, everything has to be sold quickly.
Here we have bottle gourd which is a favourite vegetable among people of the Indian subcontinent and in particular people of the Bengali origin. Bottle gourds are cut into small pieces mixed with meat or fish to make into a curry. It can be cooked on its own as a side vegetable dish. It is said that nothing gets wasted of a bottle gourd vine, the leaves are eaten as a saag. (spinach)

Health experts believe eating cooked bottle gourd or drinking its juice in the morning has a health benefits, it improves the the bodies digestive system, weight loss and lowers high cholesterol levels.
