Dance ceremony at the
There are different times when I like to visit the Borobudur, the ancient Budhist temple situated about 1 hour outside Yogyakarta, Java. Early morning and late afternoon, obviously because of the incredible beautyful light, lower temperatures and lack of tourists. But the best day for me to visit this astonishing temple is on Sundays. This is the day that local Indonesian people visit the Borobudur with their family and friends. Often the gardens around the temple are filled with dance, families eating and all kinds of other surprising performances. This picture is of one of the children participating in a danceperformance. It wasn't untill I downloaded this image that I noticed the camera had actually captured the childs eyes in such a great way!
Children in the...kam
This picture was also taken during one of my many visits to this kampung next to Sunda Kelapa in Jakarta. The children were a little "malu" (shy) keeping a safe distance....I didn't want to disturb their playful mood and focussed on the wall, guiding me to the children as natural as possible.
Happy children Kampun
The kampung is situated next to Sunda Kelapa, the old harbor of the capital city of Indonesia Jakarta. The kampung can be reached by small boats when visiting the harbor. The boats are operated by fishermen who live in the kampung. The people in the kampung are extremely nice and welcoming and the children allways love to greet you and to be in the spotlight of your camera. I am allways amazed by the positive energy that people can generate, especially under poor conditions.
Ceremony at Pura...Be
The cremation ceremony of a deceased family member can take place in 5 stages. This partly depends on the financial situation of the family. The timing of the ceremony is decided by the position of the moon. One of the ceremonies of Dewa’s deceased grandfather took place at Pura Besakih. This temple, also considered to be the mothertemple, is situated against the slopes of the holy Gunung Agung in the Karangassem region. In this Photo Dewa’s mother enters the temple, carrying offers for the ceremony.
Cousins Bali style
Dewa's cousins, Wira and Dodek, love to imitate their older uncles when posing for a picture...The kind and creative nature of the Balinese people are allways reflected in the way they like to pose for these pictures. Taking pictures of friends and family, especially with mobile phones, is allmost a national hobby.
Adix taking a break
Inbetween ceremonies, Adix is taking a break and finding enough energy to show me that is everything is still bagus (ok). Balinese youngsters have a lot of fun expressing themselves as creatively as possible. With "style"........
Odix showing his new.
The youth of Bali is equipped with smartphones, laptops, tatoes, piercings....Personal expression and identity are centered around status and just a sense of being different. Nevertheless family traditions are valued as the most important aspect of life. Ceremonies are experienced as a spiritual and social event and a way to honor ancestors and the gods.
Sunset at Prambanan..
Sunset at Prambanan temple in Yogyakarta. Late afternoon is a great time to visit this Hindu temple, located about 20 minutes outside Yogyakarta. While most visitors stroll inside the temple complex, its worth it to sit quietly outside the temple and watch the sun set behind the temple. Some parts are still under construction.
Sunset at Prambanan..
The Prambanan Temple has been under construction for a few years now. The damage being created by vulcanic eruptions from nearby Gunung Merapi and earthquakes. This picture was taken during sunset.
Dewa at the cremation
The remains of Dewa's grandfather are carefully placed in this bull. The family and people from the village spend many days to build these ceremonial objects. The type of object that is used for the cremation depends on the caste of the family. The holyman of the family village and temple leads the ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, the remains are being cremated.
Dewa carrying the...r
I was honored with an invitation to attend the cremation ceremony of my best friend's grandfather. As oldest son in the family, Dewa had the responsibility to bring the remains of his grandfather to the cremation side. In these traditional ceremonies the family joins with other village families in celebrating the life of the deceased. The journey from the house to the cremation side is a very inspirational and devotianal experience, filled with music, dance, symbolic artifacts and a great sense of togetherness.
Ricefields Manggis...
Before attending a Balinese ceremony, I visited the hardly travelled and visited hills behind Manggis village, Karangassem Bali. For the Balinese people, there is a very spiritual and natural connection between the mountains, the sea, the land and the sky. When my good friend Taleman walked me through the ricefields at this stunning location I could feel and see the importance of this connection symbolised in his reflection in the ricefield.

After a beautyful and inspiring walk to the crater of Gunung Bromo, I took a rest at the edge of the caldera to enjoy the changing light. To my surprise an active stream of lava appeared at nearby volcanoe.

Gunung Bromo, Java,..
Mount Bromo (Gunung Bromo), magical vieuws of this active vulcanoe during sunrise. One has to be a bit lucky to actually get a clear view of this volcanoe. At times the volcanoe can be covered in the mist, especially early in the morning or late afternoon.
