At home with the Karen people
Kayin,
Myanmar
Living amongst the hills in Kayin state you can find a few Karen villages. Most have fled long ago to Thailand being persecuted by the Burmese government. The word, Karen was originally a derogatory term referring to non-Buddhist ethnic groups.
Many Karen people still residing in Burma are either Christian, converted by British missionaries or animist, as were the people we met here in this village.
The Karen are farmers.
