Inside Pratidwandi's shop we find two great-grandsons busy making classical harmoniums a traditional Bengal instrument. Every piece is handmade and carefully crafted. Bengal music has a long tradition of religious and secular song-writing, the earliest music was influenced by Sanskrit chants.
We talk for a while to the craftsmen, its dark in the shop and I wonder how they can carry out such delicate work in this light,- the only light is from a dirty window. They ask if we would like to hear, of course we do. We sit and they play their own instruments and sing. A lump is in my throat, these extraordinarily gifted men will spend their lives in this dusty shop in Shankharia Bazar.
