The Chittagong Hill Tracts are a unique part of Bangladesh.
Large tracts of the region are covered by hills, creating a mountain ecosystem rich in biological and cultural diversity. But securing nutritious food for these indigenous people is a challenge. They cultivate ginger and turmeric a cash crop, instead of paddy fearing that their paddy fields might seriously be damaged in rat infestation as in the past. Their staple is wild potato and the inner white soft part (known in Marma language as ‘Nappew Googli’) of banana trees.
Not many people pass through the village of Thanchi, in the CHT. Take a look at the map view and you can see how isolated it is.
